Introductory Cert in Procurement & Logistics – Humanitarian Context

This is an intensive 4-day course that introduces participants to the key areas of the Supply Chain in a Humanitarian and/or Emergency response context. The scenarios discussed during the four days are all based on real events that have occurred in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Ukraine, South Sudan and elsewhere.

The course content has been developed by the Emergency Logistics Team and has been revised and updated to reflect the latest humanitarian emergencies with a specific emphasis on the Middle East crises but not confined to this area only.

Aim: To provide participants with an introduction to some of the key principles of Procurement & Logistics in a Humanitarian context.

Objectives:

  • Understanding: To introduce participants to the procurement & logistics world and expand their understanding of a humanitarian response from a logistics perspective.
  • Critical Thinking: To review actual events and the implications of decisions made.
  • Capacity Building: To build the capacity of the attendees so they can be prepared for working in different areas of a humanitarian response
  • Planning: Plan effective processes for procurement, warehousing, fleet, assets and distribution

The course is aimed at:

  • Those working in government or aid organisations who are office based and involved in some aspect of a Humanitarian response in fundraising, public relations, awareness raising or development education who have no logistics experience but would like to have a more in-depth knowledge of this field.
  • Development aid workers who have experience in the field but have not worked directly in a logistics department.
  • Individuals who are keen to learn more about what role logistics plays in a Humanitarian context and who may wish to look for employment in this sector in the future.

Introduction to Protection & Safeguarding in Logistics Principles

Aims:                                                                             

  1. To provide participants with an introduction to some of the key principles of Protection & Safeguarding in Logistics
  2. To ensure that there is Protection mainstreaming within the Supply Chain & Logistics department.
  • To ensure that Protection and good programming is at the forefront to all humanitarian actors work which will allow for successful outcomes and provide crucial safeguards for beneficiaries.

Objectives:

  • Understanding: To introduce participants to the Protection Principles within Logistics and expand their understanding of a humanitarian logistics response from a Protection perspective.
    • Critical Thinking: To review some recent events and the Protection implications made during this Logistics emergency response
    • Capacity Building: To build the capacity of the attendees in order to generate greater awareness of strengthening Protection principles into Logistics operations
    • Planning: Plan effective Logistics processes which take into account the challenges of embedding the Protection principles.
